True Green is not Woke

Green thinking is not Woke [Note: Woke].

Woke centres identity; Green centres interconnectedness and responsibility. Identity is concerned with "me-me-me" or "us-us-us". Responsibility is concerned with "others-others-others", all of whom are interconnected with us, and in its Green version, this includes other species and the planet, and future generations.

The main thing they have in common is that both are against, or at least seriously criticise, the evil of the current establishment(s). The evil that current Wokism is against is that of an arrogant power, which denies the identity of groups that feel themselves marginalized. The evil that true Green is against is that of greed and irresponsibility towards the Creation - towards animals, plants, ecosystems and the planet. Green wants an attitude of caring responsibility towards those. Christian / religious Green adds responsibility towards God.

---*---

The difference between true Green and current Wokism is fundamental, not a mere matter of emphasis.

The so-called Green Movement began as true Green, found itself anti-establishment and began to attract other anti-establishment people of all shades, and eventually emphasised Woke issues rather than Green. (The Green Party in England and Wales was once called "a coalition of the dispossessed.) As a result, environmental issues became less and less important to so-called Greens, such that in the 1990s the Green Party in England and Wales seemed to be 'ashamed' of its environmental roots and in elections hardly mentioned them. In the 2025 Runcorn and Helsby by-election, the Green Party leaflet did not mention climate change once, nor most of the environmental issues, except for insulating homes; it seems that the candidate was told not to include it!

For Christians

Many Christians are anti-woke and, because current Wokism is believed to include Green thinking, many are also anti-Green. But they should not be.

Christians believe that Reality, include all stars, planets, plants, animals and humans, and the laws that govern them, were designed and created by God. They believe that "God has compassion on all God made" [Psalm 145:9], that humans were mandated as 'shepherds' of the rest of Creation, caring for it [Genesis 1-2]. And that all Creation will one day, through Christ, experience the "freedom" that the people of God will experience [Romans 8]. Therefore, Christians should be at the forefront of Green.

How deeply sad it is, therefore, to see so many Christians fighting against Green. Especially in the USA.

Notes

Note on Woke. By "Woke" here I mean the modern meaning of that work, not its original meaning. Its original meaning was "woken up to the reality of social (in)justice" especially against black people. Its current meaning has bloated by accretion to "support and promote LGBT, feminism and anti-fascism as well as anti-racism." Original Woke was a movement for justice and often care; current Wokism is a movement based on identity and often anger.
