On Abortion

We are all interconnected [Note 1]. Ubuntu means "I am becaose you are." To me, abortion is the very antithesis of this: "I am because you are not."

My attitude to abortion is very similar to my attitude to war [Note 2]: I hover between complete pacifism and thinking it might be valid in a few very exceptional circumstances.

Notice that the reason I oppose abortion is because of fundamental interconnectedness, which implies responsibility. Not because of the usual reason, the sanctity of life. Yes, I do believe life is 'sacred' (in a way that I define elsewhere), but that is not my reason for opposing abortion or warfare.

To me, both the pro-abortionists who are anti-war, and the anti-abortionists who are pro-war are hypocrites [Note 3].

(However, I realise I might be wrong to believe this, so I do not want to force any of this on others.)

Notes

Note 1. We are interconnected. We relate. Ubuntu refers to each person's connectedness with and dependence on others. Is not the dependency relationship between mother and unborn child one of the most intimate relationships that two entities can have?

Note 2. On abortion and war. Of course there are many differences between abortion and war. But both involve killing human beings. And though warfare is usually a national action and abortion is an individual action, when we consider over 200,000 abortions are carried out each year in the UK, we find abortion is not quite so individual in its effects.

Note 3. There is a tendency for these pairs to go together in the current manifestations of progressivism and conservatism. Calling both sides hypocrites is likely to make me an enemy of both! So be it!
